How does an IPO application work?

Understand the broad sequence from official offer documents to application, allotment and listing—without treating an IPO as a recommendation.

An Initial Public Offering (IPO) is a process through which securities are offered to the public. Details differ for each issue, so dates, price bands, eligibility and documents must always be checked against official sources.

Start with verified information

Before considering any application, review the offer document and the information published through the recognised exchange or regulatory channels. Do not rely on social-media claims, unofficial tips or promises of listing gains.

Check first: price band, application dates, lot size, issue type, official offer document and the relevant exchange information.

The broad process

  1. Review: read the official issue information and understand the risks.
  2. Apply: use an eligible broker or bank process as made available to you.
  3. Allotment: allotment is not assured and depends on the applicable issue process.
  4. Listing: the listed price can move up or down; returns are never guaranteed.
